Grade 9 - 12

The figure

The human figure and women in particular have always been a subject of artistic representations in clay.  This art form, which has been dated back as far as 31,000 years ago still holds true to artists today.  Whether in sculptural form or painted on the surface of the vessel, women have been shown doing various activities including child bearing, and child rearing.  Take a tour of the museum’s collections and see these representations for yourself.  Following the tour, students will work with professional artists and make a figure in clay depicting roles played by women today.

This half day program is recommended for students in high school studying visual arts, family and women’s studies, interdisciplinary studies and history.
