Family Sundays

Family Sundays

Every Sunday, 11 am to 3 pm (Closed December 25 and January 1)

Join us for family-friendly art activities at the Gardiner. Family Sunday activities are included with your general admission, and youth 18 and under are always free.*

Family Sundays run from 11 am to 3 pm every Sunday, with activities for children to do on their own or with an adult. There will be demonstrations at 11:30 am and 1 pm on "clay" activity days.

Important: Please note, there will be no Family Sunday programming on December 25, 2016 and January 1, 2017. We apologizes for the inconvenience.

Our new exhibition, True Nordic: How Scandinavia Influenced Design in Canada opens this October 13. This exhibition surveys more than seven decades of Canadian ceramics, glass, textiles, jewelry and furniture.  In anticipation of the opening, we will launch a series of Family Sundays which draw from the impressive work on display and their unique element designs. Come and see it!

SUNDAY DECEMBER 4  |  11 AM – 3 PM
PAINTING ON TILES

12 Trees are up! Come with your family and visit the different tree installations displayed throughout the museum. Continue with the festivities and join us for our annual 12 Trees Family Sunday! Activities include gingerbread cookie decoration, a clay making table, and festive ornament making with sparkles, sequins, and more. Don’t miss out on this annual tradition!

SUNDAY DECEMBER 11  |  11 AM – 3 PM
CLAY

This is your chance to meet “Goofus”, the Gardiner Museum’s latest acquisition! This 13 cm tall figurine is a hybrid between a horse, a sheep, and a giraffe, and it was one of the Deichmann’s most popular products. Come and see it on display in the special exhibition, True Nordic: How Scandinavia influenced design in Canada, and then join us to create “Goofus” replicas at the Family Sunday table!

There will be clay demonstrations at 11:30 am and 1 pm.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 18  |  11 AM – 3 PM
PAINTING ON TILES

Scandinavian design often invokes the use of gentle and earthy palettes. While you will find many examples of this use of colour in True Nordic, you will also be surprised to find textiles and ceramics that challenge a unified aesthetic and feature vibrant and multiple colours. Join us this Sunday to paint tiles inspired by the colorful textiles exhibited in True Nordic, using examples from the work of Finnish émigré and fabric designer Esa Niemi and the iconic Marimekko prints.

*Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult to participate in Family Sunday activities, and each accompanying adult must purchase a general admission ticket. Children cannot be left unattended at any time.
