Family Day

Every Sunday

Free with Admission

Ever wonder what to do with your family on a Sunday?  Well look no further! Join our mascots Arabella, Ting, Clayton and Nicco, and bring the whole family to the Gardiner for family-friendly activities — free with admission! Kids under 12 are always free (with the accompaniment of an adult).

Most activities take place in the lobby, but if you don’t see us when you come in, just ask one of our friendly volunteers where they are taking place.

Family Days run from 11 am to 4 pm with activities for children to do on their own or with an adult. Make sure you also check out our discovery boxes, do a scavenger hunt and take some colouring sheets home with you.

We look forward to seeing you here!

Upcoming Family Days:

FEBRUARY 1, 2015
PAINTING ON TILES

Is spring on its way? An old tradition known as Groundhog Day seeks to answer this every year on February 2nd. According to legend, the groundhog emerges from its burrow at noon to look for its shadow. If it is a sunny day and the groundhog sees its shadow, it returns to its hole to sleep… winter continues for 6 more weeks. If it does not see its shadow, it remains outside because warmer weather is on its way. What is your prediction? Come and join us for Family Day and paint a groundhog -outside or inside, take a guess!

CLAY

Have you ever noticed how flexible clay is? If you look around the museum, you will notice clay can take many different shapes - from a cabbage, at our contemporary gallery, to the giant sculptures that greet you at the lobby. Join us this Sunday at family day to make clay kites, and why not, flying kites? Have some fun with clay’s plasticity and celebrate Kite Flying Day.

FEBRUARY 15, 2015
PAINTING ON TILES

Have you seen our new exhibition Women, Art, & Social Change: Newcomb Pottery Enterprise? Inspired by the flora and fauna of the Gulf South, the pieces in the exhibition offer the perfect inspiration for our tile-painting theme this Sunday. With spring only a month away, we will use the patterns in these pieces to think of plants and animals in our surroundings. Find patterns in nature and use them to decorate your tile at Family Day.

FAMILY DAY

This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities. Make this a special day by visiting the Gardiner Museum with your family. Take advantage of this holiday and join our clay table! With your family, explore the museum and its fantastic collection through scavenger hunts, crosswords and much more. See you at the lobby!

FEBRUARY 22, 2015
CLAY

This February 19 marks the start of the Chinese New Year, a holiday celebrated in China and by Chinese people all over the world.  Each year is distinguished by one of 12 different animals: can you guess what this year’s is? 2015 is the year of the sheep! Among its many associations, the sheep is considered a symbol of the arts and creativity. Come to Family Day this Sunday and unleash your creative side by working with clay. Join Connie and Jared at the lobby to make your own sheep!
