Speaker: Dr. Elizabeth Legge, Associate Professor of Art, University of Toronto

Kathy Venter’s life-size sculptures of women take their place in a history of sculpture, but they have peculiar qualities of their own. Dr. Legge explores how Venter creates figures who seem at once ancient and fully in the present, both a comfortable presence and an enigmatic interruption of our experience of the world.

$15 General / $10 Members

Sponsored by Dr. Lorna Marsden

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Elizabeth Legge has written on Dada, Surrealism, and contemporary Canadian and British art, in a number of journals including Art History, Word and Image, and Representations. Her intellectual interests include: the ways that artists have worked with and against language, and the relationship of language and image; and the instrumental uses of religious, racial, and national stereotypes and rhetorics in art. In 2005 she was a visiting professor at the Humanities Centre at Johns Hopkins University. Her most recent book explores Michael Snow's work and international critical reception.
