Harlequin Romance: Europe's Love Affair with Commedia dell'Arte

Harlequin Romance: Europe's Love Affair with Commedia dell'Arte

Thursday February 25, 6:30 pm
FREE FOR GARDINER FRIENDS

Throughout its history, the Commedia dell’Arte exercised a powerful form of social criticism. As the political and economic conditions of Europe changed, it adapted to the new circumstances by reversing the direction of its criticism and migrating from the stage to the world of the decorative arts. This lecture by Domenico Pietropaolo, Principal of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto and a professor of Italian Literature, will trace the main lines of that transition, showing how the characters continued to flourish as protagonists of their new domains.

Speaker: Domenico Pietropaolo

In partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute  |  Co-presented by Victoria University in the University of Toronto

Guna Art Today: An Artist Talk by Oswaldo DeLeón Kantule

Guna Art Today: An Artist Talk by Oswaldo DeLeón Kantule

Thursday March 24, 6:30 pm

Like traditional Guna artists, Oswaldo DeLeón Kantule is inspired by his natural, human, and spiritual environment. His process is one of fusion: combining the sacred symbols found in Guna pictographs, traditional rites, and ceremonies with those found in other indigenous cultures, as well as in urban culture, recodifying them to create his own visual language. This talk will focus on the traditional elements of Guna art and how they are fused with contemporary symbols to communicate the artist's message.
