On the Table - 100 Years of Functional Ceramics in Canada
February 15 to April 22

Landscape, lakes, and such great Canadians icons as the beaver, the maple leaf, and the canoe have been celebrated in Canadian ceramics for generations. They have appeared across the spectrum of ceramics from such popular pieces as Blue Mountain Pottery to artistic work like Robin Hopper’s. On the Table, a touring exhibition at the Gardiner this winter, is a compilation of the work of more than 100 Canadian ceramists and 20 manufacturers. Co-curators Sandra Alfoldy and Rachel Gotlieb chart unexplored territory in this examination of the intersections between studio and commercial ceramics. The exhibition explores three themes: construction of Canadian identity; the relationship between craft, design and industry; and the impact of aesthetics on the decoration and display of ceramics.
