Clay Portraits: Gertraud Möhwald

Gertraud Möhwald was one of the most significant ceramic artists working in postwar Europe. Her work combines classical European sculptural traditions with her experiences as a young German who survived the bombing of Dresden and lived in East Germany after its separation from the West. Read More.

Made In China – Export Porcelain from the Leo and Doris Hodroff Collection at Winterthur

Made In China was the Canadian debut of one of the largest and finest collections of export porcelain in the world. This porcelain was made by the Chinese for European and American audiences from the 1500s until the 1800s. The late David Howard, an expert on export porcelain and co-author of the exhibition catalogue wrote, “What is particularly encouraging [about the exhibition is] the effect it will have on the understanding of the China trade, which was perhaps the first major international trade undertaken by the new United States.” The works on display were donated and on loan to Delaware’s Winterthur Gallery, largely from the collection of American philanthropists Leo and Doris Hodroff. On the Table - 100 Years of Functional Ceramics in Canada

Landscape, lakes, and such great Canadian icons as the beaver, the maple leaf, and the canoe have been celebrated in Canadian ceramics for generations. They have appeared across the spectrum of ceramics from such popular pieces as Blue Mountain Pottery to artistic work like Robin Hopper’s. On the Table, a touring exhibition originating at the Gardiner Museum, is a compilation of the work of more than 100 Canadian ceramists and 20 manufacturers. Read more.

Battle of Britain: Terracottas and Other Work

This breathtaking exhibition featured large-scale terracotta reliefs by artist Paul Day. The two main reliefs were used as models for the British bronze reliefs on London’s Embankment that are dedicated to the Battle of Britain. Read more.

Picasso and Ceramics

The Gardiner’s mounting of Picasso and Ceramics in 2004 is the largest exhibition of Picasso’s work in clay ever seen in Canada. The exhibition gave visitors an opportunity to discover an important part of Picasso’s creative universe. Following the exhibition, one of these great pieces was loaned to the Museum. Large Vase with Veiled Women is currently on display in the Contemporary Gallery. Read more.

Passion & Porcelain: Pre-Revolutionary French Ceramics From the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art

Passion & Porcelain was the last exhibition at the Gardiner Museum before it closed in January 2004 for renovation and expansion. This exhibition featured priceless porcelain exclusively on loan from the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. Read more.

Life Taking Shape: Ceramics from teh Aaron Milrad Collection

In 1999, Aaron Milrad, an eminent Canadian arts and culture lawyer, gave one of the most important collections of international contemporary ceramics in Canada to the Gardiner Museum.
