For ages 18+

Start by learning the basic techniques of hand building—pinch, coil, and slab building—to create functional and sculptural wares. You’ll also learn the fundamentals of creating and finishing pieces on the pottery wheel. This 8-week class is designed for beginners.

This class includes a 10kg bag of clay, and access to glazes and underglazes. Additional bags of clay can be purchased for $35 each.

Class Outline:

  • Week 1: Learn to pinch, coil, and roll slabs to create functional or sculptural works, with a focus on cylinders and cups
  • Week 2: Learn the fundamental of throwing a cylinder on the wheel
  • Week 3: Trim your wheel pieces and learn to make attachments such as handles
  • Week 4: Continue to work on hand-building techniques to create bowls and trays
    Learn to make a bowl on the wheel
  • Week 5: Review trimming and trim a bowl on the wheel
    Continue to hand build or make new pieces on the wheel
  • Week 6: Learn decoration techniques for hand-built and wheel pieces
  • Week 7: Continue works in progress
  • Week 8: Glaze and complete works

  • Please ensure the course you choose works with your schedule. For any withdrawals, a non-refundable fee of $50 fee per course will be charged, regardless of the reason for withdrawal. Withdrawals will not be accepted for any reason within 10 business days prior to the program start date or after the program has begun.
  • Using the pottery wheel may cause serious injury to a person who has a pacemaker. Consult a physician before use.

Instructor

Chloe Begg


Chloe Begg is an educator and emerging artist living in Toronto/Tkaronto. After receiving an M.Sc. in Sustainable Development and working for five years in the solar industry, Chloe pivoted to complete a certificate in Ceramic Arts from the Haliburton School of Art and Design in 2022. In early 2024, Chloe attended the Banff Centre for Arts as an emerging artist in residence. In the summer of 2024 Chloe participated in the City of Toronto’s Public Art Mentorship program, which will culminate in a six-month installation at the Toronto Sculpture Garden in April 2026 focusing on play and interactivity. In 2025, Chloe participated in the DesignTO Festival with a solo exhibition, The Artist Project in Toronto, and group shows across Ontario. Chloe is currently working with mentors through the Cohorts.Art and FUSION mentorship programs to further work which focuses on connection, belonging, and identity.
