Community Arts Space 2023

Established in 2016, Community Arts Space (CAS) is the Gardiner’s incubator for community engagement though clay-based projects. The program provides an inclusive space for artists, educators, and community members to connect, collaborate, and explore their creativity through hands-on participation and open dialogue.

This year’s CAS summer presentation features works created through a series of intensive workshops held from July 10 – 24 and led by multidisciplinary artist and mentor, Sharon Norwood, along with five members of VIBE Arts’ Emerging Artists program: Andre Lopez, Jasmine Vanstone, Nicholas Ridiculous, Serene Chan, and Talie Shalmon.

These workshops were inspired by Norwood’s intuitive and experimental approach to working with clay and her process of manipulating the surfaces of found objects through carving, engraving, and adding transfer decals to create intricate patterns, gestural lines, and nuanced textures. These details are not only visually engaging, but also carry deeper meanings and evoke connections between issues of class, race, and gender.

Working with Norwood and Gardiner Museum staff, the five Emerging Artists were guided through different hand-building techniques such as coiling, slabbing, pinching, and slip casting, which are fundamental to working in the medium of clay. The participants were then asked to translate their own artistic practices or works that inspire them into three-dimensional clay forms, and to create markings that reflect their own identities as artists.

Reflecting on their works, visitors are invited to participate by making their own mark on the found objects displayed alongside the artists’ installation. As markings created by visitors accumulate, these found objects will become a narrative of collective identities.

Special thanks to Diana DiNatale, Kendra Yee, and Wendy Nichol.
