This exhibition presents ceramic sculptures created by secondary students from across Toronto through a dynamic partnership between the Gardiner Museum and the Toronto District School Board. Inspired by the exhibition Linda Rotua Sormin: Uncertain Ground, nearly 300 students explored themes of identity, place, and belonging, while engaging in processes of building, breaking, balancing, and reassembling with clay. Through experimentation and reflective inquiry, students created works that embody tension and transformation, while celebrating clay as a medium that carries memory and movement. Their works also highlight themes of fragility, instability, and interconnectedness, echoing Sormin’s own investigations.
This collaboration marks a significant step in revitalizing ceramics education across secondary schools by strengthening studio practice, expanding access to contemporary art experiences, and deepening students’ understanding of material culture within a museum context.
