Brenda Nieves

Brenda Nieves is a sculptor, ceramic artist, living and working in her studio
in the Junction in Toronto. Nieves trained at Sheridan College in the Craft
and Design program 2015-6. Her earlier career was designing children’s
clothing, then as a Fashion Director for Eaton’s. Nieves works in multiple
medias, primarily in clay but also explores fabric, painting and printmaking.

Brenda Nieves focuses on hand building, including coil, slab, slamming, forming, and carving and incorporating thrown elements. Her practice includes both additive and subtractive processes. Nieves’ passion for colour is reflected in her use of multiple glazes and their exciting results. Brenda describes her work as expressing “an image of the natural world transformed in clay and glaze.”

Nieves’ creative life is a composite formed by the life she has lived with fragments of memories, excursions north coloring the visions she has for her work. The power of the human spirit is mirrored in her representation of the power of water, rocks and growth. The impetus to create art full time is her desire to make life precious for both herself and those who engage in her work.
