Description

Artist Statement:

The human figure was originally at the heart of my focus in clay, but the source of my inspiration shifted as I became acutely aware of the wildlife around me. I wanted to draw attention to wild animals who had managed to adapt to life among humans, and had often earned the unfair reputation as “pests”. My approach has been to depict wildlife subjects in almost human narratives, injecting the scenarios with humour and lightheartedness. Throughout the mentorship with Susan Low-Beer I have been exploring ways to add a textural surface to my work, while at the same time creating pieces for an upcoming installation titled “A Hare-Raising Tale”. Behind The Scenes represents a tableaux from A Hare Raising Tale, and explores the idea of creating a facade to show an outward appearance, in order to conceal a less pleasant reality.– Annette ten Cate

About The Artist

Annette ten Cate

Annette ten Cate first got her start in clay at the Guelph Sculpture Group about eighteen years ago.  With her passion for clay, she enrolled and studied full time at Sheridan College in Oakville.  After she graduated Annette was accepted into a year-long residency at Medalta’s International Artist in Residence program in Alberta’s Historic Clay District.  It was there she refined her practice and changed her focus from the human figure to local wildlife.  Hand building each piece with earthenware clay and using selective wooden tools. Working from her studio in Grey County, Ontario, she continues to participate in numerous group and solo exhibitions.  As well as exhibiting in galleries nationally.
