Description

Artist Statement:

Growing up in the serene countryside, and working in an urban setting, I find myself oscillating and drawn to both contrasting worlds.  My art serves as a synthesis of these experiences.  Blending both elements of nature with the structures of culture.  I hope to prompt viewers to reflect on the interplay between the organic and the artificial.  With my choice of material and surface, I aim to capture these notions and explore the rugged textures of natural materials.  At times juxtaposing it with colourful accents that evoke the traditions of cultural presence.

In my recent sculptural work, I delve into the intricate tapestry of femininity.  Celebrating the female body as a manifestation of strength, resilience, and beauty.  With two daughters, my motivation is to explore the psychological and physical dimensions of womanhood.  Questioning societal norms, advocating for self-acceptance, and empowerment.  Aiming to spark conversations about the complexity of the human experience through my art. – Catharina Goldnau

Material: Catharina Goldnau continues to explore non-traditional ways of working with ceramic materials and forms. She uses small batches of custom clays enriched with a selection of organic and inorganic additions.  Mixing alternate materials and post-firing treatment of the surface enhance the unusual texture and earthiness of the material.  Oxides, glaze rubs, and gold luster provide depths of colour in the multi-fire process at temperatures ranging from 700 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

About The Artist

Catharina Goldnau

Catharina Goldnau explores transitions, juxtaposing traditions, and materials in sculptural work that borders functionality. Born next to the Iron Curtain in Germany, she moved to Canada at the age of 19. After academic studies, four children and a teaching career, Catharina studied ceramics under Linda Sormin and Bruce Cochrane. She is an award-winning graduate with a BA in Craft and Design and a specialty in Ceramics from Sheridan College. Forming clay by hand complements the intellectual task of manipulating clay and glaze chemistry. Catharina Goldnau is compelled to innovate, exploring non-traditional ways to manipulate clays. Combining alternative materials with clay yields intriguing variations of form and unusual finish.  The effects of heat and fire play a pan-ultimate role in altering the piece, creating new forms and surfaces, tearing and splitting in the fire. Resins and textiles may complement sculptural pieces.
