Description

Artist Statement:

My sculptures pay homage to the figurines that adorned my mother and grandmother’s curio cabinets. They infatuated me, and now I find they captivate my own daughter. Employing a subverted form of cuteness, I aim to convey nuanced narratives that urge viewers to delve beyond the surface. They are at once both cute and strange; a more accurate reflection of my contemporary life. Balancing softness and strength, permanence with impermanence. My scaled-up “figurines” have a loose, handmade and exaggerated gestural quality that embraces their imperfections. Amidst a tumultuous political and social landscape, my work exudes simplicity, harmlessness, and warmth. Rekindling my interest in a cute aesthetic serves as both a form of denial and a coping mechanism, as well as a reminder of the sentimental notions worth preserving in the face of growing complexities. – Elissa Barber

About The Artist

Elissa Barber

Formally trained as an illustrator through Sheridan’s BAA(hons) program, Elissa Barber has used image-making as a foundation in her dedicated studio practice exploring a variety of mediums with a focus on ceramics and monotype printmaking on textile. Employing the female form as the foundation of her work, Elissa explores themes of nostalgia, growing older and the personal and broader impact of a changing world.
