Description

Artist Statement:

During my recent journey to Ireland, the land of my mother’s ancestors, I traced the footsteps of her great grandfather.  He cultivated flax for linen before his voyage to Canada in 1864. Guided by an archaeologist, I traversed a field strewn with boulders and known “rock art.” I stumbled upon an uncharted petroglyph dating back approximately five thousand years. The precise geometry of its chiseled markings deeply resonated with me. Propelling to build upon the technique and creative ideas I explore in my minimalist series titled Spaces Within. I have begun to explore the female figurative form through this lens for the first time. Adorned with the tangible remnants of ancient civilizations, this series connects me through space and time to my maternal ancestors. Invoking the essence of the universal goddess within us all.– Heidi McKenzie
