Description

Artist Statement:

The hot bellowing season of abundance, of mangoes piling in heaps on the streets, bees buzzing in a festive delirium, jasmine perfuming the nights sparkling with fireflies, constellations humming over an orchestra of frogs and crickets.

This is a small recollection of memories sewn together of many such summers spent with my family, until the longest summer day in 2003, when the nest of my home was devastated in the violent wake of my father taken from us.

While this tragedy numbed and froze me, the collective procession of life kept flowing, cicadas held the day, weaver birds embroidered it with their flights and spiders knit another night in the company of wise owls. I have held close summer’s promise of thriving, this fierce hope that thaws cold forgotten corners and blossoms forth from cracks, brings bird song to ruins, fills empty voids with thickets and thus continues the dance of life and death, chaotically, rampantly, profusely. – Japneet Kaur

Japneet hand builds each form and decorates with illustration, capturing past memories and moments.

About The Artist

Japneet Kaur

Japneet Kaur graduated from Chandigarh College of Art in India in 2003. Born and raised in Punjab, she moved to Toronto in 2006, and has since been telling her tiny stories through pottery, drawing, painting, and animation. Japneet's works evoke stories of home, and places of comfort and solace to nurture the spirit. With each piece of pottery, they are hand sculpted and individually illustrated to reflect these ideas. Earth, the progenitor of clay, is the ultimate alchemist that folds within it the circles of life. From it, sprouts spring from hard shelled seeds, nurturing from them lush forests and coaxing forth hope.
