Mati Ceramics: Butterfly Vase

Description

This collection of vases was inspired by creative ensembles and the synergy that takes place between actors, dancers and musicians on a stage. Each one has its unique character that plays off and feeds into the other. A simple cylindrical body allows for endless possibilities in the way of appendages. Ensemble is the French word for “together”; while each vase is made to stand alone, it is the interplay between them that enlivens our overall experience. – Athena Sarracini

Mati Ceramics: Athena Sarracini

Athena Sarracini is a ceramic artist of Greek heritage. Her work references the palette, shapes and motifs she grew up with; the blues of the Aegean Sea and the stark minimalism of Cycladic architecture. Evil eyes, spirals, and the wave motif appear frequently in her ceramics. Exaggerated proportions, asymmetrical handles, and whimsical surface decoration all bring a sense of play to her work. Each piece is made by hand in her attic studio in downtown Toronto, and no two are the same.
